Celtic Success
Saturday 15 December, ICC Northern Regional
So, winter had arrived and with it the first competition of the new cheerleading calendar, ICC Northern Regionals. It was home ground for the Celtics and despite the fact that many were new to this arena, the girls and guys did the squad proud. “Their routines simply blew away the competition,” said Celtic supporter, Hayley Tong, “Everyone was waiting for them and they didn’t disappoint.”
Despite the nerves running through the Celtics camp the day started off with All –Girl group stunt who, through their hours of diligent practice and determination, pulled out a routine that not only wowed the judges, but also themselves! The proud four; Katie, Jo, Sophie and Beth performed flawlessly and came away with a first place trophy.
Captain 07/08, Katie Jepson said, “Competing is what it's all about: you have 2:30 minutes to prove all your hard work in the months prior to the comp. It's competitive, but there's a real sense of a cheer community and everyone recognises hard work, applauds creativity and pushing the boundaries. There's nothing that bonds a team together more than going out on that mat, giving it all you've got and walking away with a trophy.”

Co-Ed Libs
With an amazing start, the Celtics had to step up their game with the much anticipated Level 6 Co-Ed Group Stunt Division. After spending several years as reigning (National and European) Champions in this division the Celtics had a lot to prove. Off the mat people were silent in anticipation, whilst on the mat, Rachel, Laura, Tim, Mike and Tats were eagerly waiting for the first note of their music. One awestruck spectator was amazed by the performance, “Their opening basket toss and end pyramid were, without a doubt, the best stunts of the entire day” said one parent, Rhon Stevenson. Their performance earned them their record breaking 14th First place trophy.
Next, the Senior Partner Stunt division with four Celtic couples due on the mat, the tension in the warm up area was evident and all the competitors knew that the slightest mistake could send them into last place.
First up was Tats and Julie who opened their division with an inventive routine that gained them a solid second place. Laura and James came next with well choreographed stunts and secured them an excellent 6th place. The final couple Sophie and Jen were seen by some as a novelty, but pleasantly surprising the spectators. Celtic parent, Anne Ingram said, “I was so proud to watch my daughter compete, and to see her enter in an all-girl partner stunt doing co-ed stunts better than some boys is unbelievable, I never thought I would see it happen!” After performing a flawless routine, the two girls made British cheerleading history by taking home first place and becoming the first All-Girl Partner Stunt to ever do so!
Mike and Rachel, a couple whose names are well known in both the UK and abroad as possibly the best partnership in the British industry were next. Performing to such a standard that many others aspire to, they excelled in their division, executing complex and original stunts with consummate ease and style. At awards ceremony, the two walked away with thrilled smiles on their faces as they held their first place trophy high.
“The Celtics have some outstanding cheerleaders – it’s always a pleasure to watch them compete and I look forward to seeing what they come up with in the future!” Gary Mort, director of Skyline Cheer Academy.

All-Girl Scales
After months of practice, the crunch time for the new squad members approached as the senior cheer teams started to warm up.
The Celtic Committee Secretary 07/08, Helen Wigham describes her competition experience, “Electric. No matter how tired you may be, or how much sleep or food (or Res Bull!) you have had, you can go out there and be the best you can be because of the adrenalin pumping through your body. Having your own team, friends and family helping to cheer you on, and then hearing shouts from other teams and people that you don't even know, help to make you execute your best performance, because you know that they have faith in you even though they don't even know you.”
All-girl came first. Steaming onto the floor eager to perform, they took their positions with a spine tingling roar of “CELTICS!” commanding the arena’s attention. With outstanding tumbling, jumps, dance and pyramids the girls gave the spectators a visual spectacle and catapulted themselves into first place. Celtic cheerleader, Jess Pyne explained, “The buzz walking out on to the mat was amazing. It was so good to see all our efforts finally come together! Afterwards, we couldn't stop screaming and hugging each other. We were all so elated!” The girls ran off the mat out of breath, but with grins so big they were beaming.
The director of Skyline Cheer Academy, Gary Mort said, “All girl was by far the best routine out of them all. A vast improvement – in the past the all girl team was always overlooked but today they really shone.”
As the day was drawing to a close only one team remained, Leeds Celtics Co-Ed Elite Level 6. A division that few enter and even fewer succeed in. The small team of boys and girls walked out onto the mat to hushed voices and huge expectation. As the music began the audience were subjected to a performance of co-ed stunting the like of which no British team has ever executed before. With 2 ½ high pyramids, inverted basket tosses and a selection of some of the best partner stunters in the country, the co-ed team finished the day off with a performance that was described as “Fantastic, with a style of their own!” by the spectators heard as the team excitedly exited the mat, confident and pleased with their performance.
Celtic cheerleader, Steph Lim said “The hard work pays off because we have such a strong presence in the competitive cheerleading scene in Britain, we're well respected and I think even seen as pioneers - the co-ed team are the only in Britain that I know of who are mirror the co-ed teams in America executing partner stunts rather than group stunts and who have more boys than girls on the floor.”

All-Girl
Before the results were announced, the team knew that regardless of the judge’s verdicts, they had given their personal best and any trophies they might win were well earned and deserved.
While the scores were being calculated the Celtics couldn’t stop their stunting. In the All-Girl longest lib category, the girls placed second after a gruelling battle that lasted nearly five minutes! In the Co-ed Longest Extension the Celtics placed first and second, outstriping the other teams by a considerable margin. All-Girl group stunt won the biggest All-Girl basket toss competition and Co-Ed group won the biggest Co-Ed basket toss with a twenty foot toss followed by an Arabian Split Double Full that has never been seen in the UK before!
Outcomes of the day? Well, the Celtics showed that they are formidable force in their divisions, earning first place in all six divisions they entered, but more importantly they have proven once again that their dedication and determination has paid off and they deserve the recognition as some of the best cheerleaders in the country.
“Its a great feeling when a young athlete approaches you at a competition and tells you they want to attend Leeds University when they are old enough because of the cheerleading team. I believe the Celtics have raised the bar of University Cheerleading year after year and I hope that Celtic’s name will live on in years to come.” Sophie Ibbotson, Partner Stunt base and Social Secretary 07/08.

ICC Staff Tryout Results
On December 8th, 2007 the International Cheerleading Coalition (ICC) hosted their first ever staff tryouts in the UK. They are pioneering the way this side of the pond and are responsible for the first ever fully equipped purpose built Cheer Gym in Milton Keynes.
The ICC are hoping to be the very first truly international cheerleading company, spreading its wings in many parts of Europe as well as keeping to its roots in the States.
Congratulations to our very own Tim Peffers and John ‘Tats’ Harkins who successfully made it on to the newly recruited ICC UK staff and who will take a pivotal role in the company’s future success.
Amy Nicklin, Unity Allstars on ICC said “It is so fantastic to see further US involvement into the UK cheerleading industry and your staff were not only extremely experienced and helpful but also very approachable and friendly. It is very exciting to see a team with such expertise and enthusiasm here to stay.”

Celtic's Success at ICC
Saturday August 25th, Loughborough University
The ICC British Open Cheerleading & Dance Championship turned out to be a fantastic weekend for the Celtics where Mike, Tim, James, John, Beth, Soph, Jo H, Allie, Nat, Rach, Julie and Hannah H competed in honour of the Celtic name.
Despite having no training time (due to everyone being spread out across the country for summer) apart from the night before, we are very proud of the team, everyone pulled together and worked so hard for each other and achieved what we set out to do.
We kicked off with Tats and Julie’s partner stunt routine in Level 5, who placed 2nd.
The co-ed group stunt performed in the open division, and won a roll of Tiffin mat for the highest score of all the partner stunts and group stunts.
Straight after Mike and Rach put out their partner stunt routine in open, without a choreographed routine, but still did the Celtic’s proud and pleased the crowd.
After a very short break Extreme was next in co-ed open. The routine was running smoothly until the end, when poor Nat turned her ankle and had to hop off the mat and our music started again half way through. Despite this, we still succeeded in obtaining the highest cheer team score of the day and won 2 rolls of Tiffin mats.
Congratulations to all, a great weekend was had.

BCA University and Midlands Competition
The Telford International Centre, Telford

CONGRATULATIONS
to everyone on such a strong performance at Telford this year! (and to DEPhoto for FINALLY getting a decent photo of the wolfwall!!)
247 teams from 73 squads competed at BCA Telford over Easter weekend
University Competition 7th April:
1st place Allstars in Co-ed Open
1st place in Trio – Mike, Rach and Tim
1st place Co-ed Group Stunt
2nd place Elites in All-girl Intermediate
3rd place All-girl Group Stunt
4th place Spirit in Senior Dance Small
5th place Fever in Senior Dance Medium
Midlands Competition 8th April:
1st place Allstars in Co-ed Open
4th place Elites in All-girl Intermediate
4th Fever in Senior Dance Medium
11th place All-girl Group Stunt
Once again, Leeds Celtics obtained some excellent results at the BCA University competition and Midland Classic.
Starting the day off at Uni Comp were our group stunts. All girl group stunt performed well despite Shauna having only just recovered from an ankle injury and despite a minor mishap managed to place 3rd. Mike, Tim, Rach, Cat and Beth were outstanding in Co-Ed group stunt, coming first (out of 13) for the eleventh time in a row! Tim, Mike and Rach also placed 1st in Partner Stunt trio despite some tough competition from the likes of Reading University.
Next came the turn of our Elites who came runners up in the intermediate cheer section much to their surprise. Allstars were perhaps the most nervous of all our teams with only 3 hours of practice before the competition (without Tim B who arrived on the day!) and an unfortunate late drop-out. Thankfully we pulled together as a team, neatened everything up and placed first in the University Co-Ed Open section much to the delight of everyone (especially Tim!)
With the cheer performances over with, everyone could now relax and prepare for dance. Spirit did their ‘Cats’ routine well with excellent technical ability and fantastic cheer faces from Jo Hessey, which placed them 4th in Senior Dance Small. Fever did equally well and with some adjustments to the routine came 5th in the Senior Dance Medium category.
The following day we were up bright and early to be at the International Centre for 8.30 am to practise Allstars as we were due to perform at 9am as Mike, Rach and James had to dash off soon after for the fourth round of ‘Britain’s got talent’. After words of good luck from Ivan, one of the BCA directors and a bit of pre-performance psyching up from Tim we opened BCA Midlands Classic with our Open routine. Despite our tiredness we performed excellently and secured another 1st place trophy in this category.
Tim, Sophie and Shauna gallantly stepped in to perform a partner stunt trio routine which had been made up in a matter of hours. However, it made our team proud (and laugh) and was perhaps the only partner stunt trio ever where all of the members have flown!!! Well done guys!
Elites faced much stiffer competition on Sunday against established all-star teams, often with quite young flyers. An injury to Justine meant that Katie had to step in to fly and we pulled off an almost flawless routine, gaining us 4th place and the highest placed Uni team in that category!! (Rach was gutted she couldn’t watch Elites bring it home!)
Our final routine of the weekend was Fever and despite the tiredness of all the competitors and the absence of Beth, we performed the routine well and with the added quality of our ‘larger than life’ hair came 4th out of 9 teams. Go fever!
I think everyone will agree that the weekend has been a total success and I would like to thank the coaches and the committee on behalf of the entire team for organising everything and ensuring that Leeds Celtics continue to be successful. Well done everyone!!!

BUSA press release following BCA University Competition
as featured on the homepage of the BUSA website complete with a photo of our very own wolfwall!!
12.04.071596 Cheerleaders descend on Telford
The 4th annual BCA University Cheerleading Competition was an awesome showcase for how far university teams have progressed in both talent and creativity. This event is proving popular with a further 43% growth this April.
110 teams from 45 universities took part at the Telford International Centre on Easter Saturday. 1,596 entrants and a close to capacity audience.
Doors opened at 8:30. Registration flowed quickly. First routines started sharp at 9:30 with competition timing remaining on schedule throughout the day. Partner Stunt groups of five, Trios, then Cheerleading divisions, and finally Dance. Using dual judging panels it was almost non stop action on the floor, generally 30 second gaps between routines. Camaraderie and sportsmanship is a hallmark of cheerleading, for whenever a team performs everyone enthusiastically supports them.
Teams came from as far as Plymouth Edinburgh and Norwich.
The scoring was close in almost every division, demonstrating the high skills levels being performed. 80% of universities went home with at least one trophy. The overall rankings table was headed by Leeds, followed by Reading, Glasgow, Bristol and Southampton.
As always many months of detail planning and organisation go in to events of this magnitude. Special thanks to all on our large staff team for their work and dedication in making this run so smoothly. A safe sport, the paramedics reported only half a dozen ice packs over a full day of intensive athletic performances.
Special thanks to Nigel Mayglothing who was our guest on Saturday, and kindly presented the trophies.
Results were published online by 3 PM on Easter Monday.

Celitcs on Britain's Got Talent!
This summer the Celtic's have been battling it out with other acts from around the country for a coveted spot on the Royal Variety Show. Making it through to the quarter finals (3rd round) they also managed to make several appearances on prime time national television.
Simon “Where are the pon poms?” Cowell predictably didn’t like us, and was the only one to press the buzzer citing that cheerleading is too American. Amanda Holden on the other hand loved our performance saying it is different and exciting. She also loves the notion that “young people getting together and doing something they love makes her happy”. Piers Morgan also put us through to the next round believing that we had what it takes to make it.
While we were backstage, we also had the privilege to talk with Ant and Dec and even managed to put them both into Preps!!
Congratulations Celtics
Do you think that you can dance rings around Justin Timberlake, give David Copperfield a run for his money or belt out a tune better than Whitney?
Does your animal act leave people speechless? Is your mime work mesmerizing or maybe your child dreams of stardom!
Whatever your talent is then ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent wants YOU! There are absolutely no rules, any talent, any age – That’s it!
The show has been auditioning and will be presented by none other than Ant & Dec!
Celtics have auditioned and we’ll keep you posted on future developments so watch this space.

2006

Sunday 3rd December 2006
The Brighton Centre, Brighton, Sussex
Hey everyone!
Just wanted to say a big thanks to everyone for Southern. Everyone did really well and we came away with 4 trophies out of the 5 divisions that we entered. In case anyone isn't sure or missed the awards or anything, this is where we came:
All girl group stunt (me, sophie, katie, jo, shauna) 1st
Co-ed group stunt (tim, rach, mike, cat, beth) 1st
Allstars (Adult Open) 1st (we were the only entrants but we needed to score 70% of the marks to get 1st)
Spirit (senior dance large) 3rd
Fever (senior dance medium) 4th
Unfortunately Elites didn't place but you guys all did your best and the routine went really well so please don't be disheartened by it. My dad took a rather shaky video of it and it looked nice! All I ask for is that people do their best, I can't ask for more than that and you guys did great! Hope you all enjoyed your time on the mat.
Thanks for everyone for being patient (especially the people who only entered dance!), it was a long day but I hope everyone had fun. I'm so so so so proud of you all!!!
I think our next comp will probably be Uni comp/Midlands regionals in Telford on Easter weekend. We get to stay in the nicest hotel you'll stay in whilst you're cheering (it even has a swimming pool!) and uni comp is espesh a really fun and friendly comp with all the teams cheering each other on! If you can't make this comp, please let us know before the start of next semester as we will be re-doing routines etc.
Have a great Christmas if I don't see you before then and I'll see you in the New Year! Practice will start as soon as the exam period is over. In case anyone missed my announcement on the coaches, Tim will now be our Head Coach, with Rachel as Assistant Coach. Hope everyone's as excited as me about the new coaching arrangements!
Lots of cheer/christmassy love!!!

Europeans - Oslo
WOW!
Congratulations everyone on a VERY successful trip to Norway!
We have just arrived home victorious and buzzing from the excitement of such a huge cheerleading event! Not only was it an honour to represent our country but it was a truly amazing experience! Co-ed group stunt were faced with their toughest challenge yet, and after some drama, an extremely bad performance during warm up time in front of the judges and some rushed shuffling of their routine they managed to pull it all out on the floor and place FIRST! The results were announced minutes after England were pushed out of the world cup (sniff) and when both 3rd and 2nd place had been announced and it wasn’t us, everyone gave up hope, so it wasn’t such a surprise to see the group stunt team almost falling out of their seats when they announced 1st place Uni……ted Kingdom! They looked thrilled standing on the podium receiving their trophies and medals!
As for Allstars our luck ran out! Everything was going great until the actual performance. The ground-up wolfwall went up smoothly…and that was about all that went right! Lucy landed funny on the dismount and dislocated her ankle (ouch) and had to hop off the mat, while the rest of us were all stuck there not quite sure what to do! Needless to say, we lost (quite drastically.)
But we would all like to wish Lucy a *speedy recovery*…we love you!
There is also a special thank you to go out to Big Al from Chorley Warriors who stepped in at the last minute for Mike who couldn’t attend. He did amazing in both group stunt and allstars and certainly made a good impression on the team.

A Special Tribute from BCA
A special tribute to Leeds Celtics for giving cheerleading a significant boost towards sports-hood on Wednesday 3rd May. We were offered a unique opportunity to arrange display performances in front of the Minister for Sport Rt Hon Richard Caborn MP, Lord Sebastian Coe of London 2012, His Excellency Mr Zha Peixin, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to the UK (representing Beijing 2008), and many of the heads of British Sport.
They did an super job at the Grange City Hotel, close to the Tower of London, in front of 150 key influential delegates. I believe cheerleading has taken a big step forwards. It must be hard for anyone seeing the two displays at the 34th CCPR Conference to deny cheerleading is an athletic sport worthy of official acceptance. Feedback was very positive. Our sincere thanks.
Why the Celtics? The remit was for an all-adult co-ed team, and they are the current University Co-ed Open Champions. Two major TV opportunities are also being arranged for university teams, including Southampton Vixens for Channel 4. Another boost this week was the very positive feature in the Sunday Times about introducing cheerleading into schools, with quotes from us. See BCA online News page for link.

South West Spirit Showcase
On the 25th March, Bristol Crusaders held their Cheer and Dance Show Case Competition as a fundraiser to help them to America, bringing all teams together to be part of a fun competition, display great Sportsmanship and Spirit and build new friendships between teams. It was really nice for all squads to come together to enjoy and cheer each other on!
And Celtics did VERY well out of it all despite the fact we were very late and almost missed our divisions (due to forgetting our insurance policy, the very remote location and roadwork re-routing in Bristol town centre! It tricked our AA-route directions!)
Here are the results:
Partner Stunt
1) Mike and Rach - Leeds Celtics - 290
2) Matt and Jodie - Crusaders - 261
3) Tim and Sarah - Leeds Celtics - 239
Senior Co-Ed Group Stunt
1) Leeds Celtics - 277
2) Crusaders - 251
3) Silver Valley Vixens - 230
Plymouth Blaze - 217
Rising Stars - WITHDRAWN
Senior Cheer Solo
1) Sarah Parker - Crusaders - 273
2) Sarah White - Crusaders - 272.5
3) Beth Kay - Leeds Celtics - 260.5
Rachael Simpson - Leeds Celtics - 253.5
Zoe Roberts - RSD Action - 248.5
Marie Salvatore - Leeds Celtics - WITHDRAWN
We also managed to win:
GRAND CHAMPION GROUP STUNT - Leeds Celtics (cheerleader
backpacks and 5 cinema tickets) HIGHEST SCORING TEAM OF THE DAY
- Leeds Celtics (30 bowling pin pens- so everyone can have one!!! and
30 free tickets to bowling- it would have been nice to take the whole
team, but unfortunately it was only in Bristol- bit of a long way to go
on a cheer social!! But we donated them to Bristol University)
Congratulations to all! Especially to Tim and sarah for doing so well in their first every partner stunt (which ended with sarah carrying tim off!!) and to Beth for placing 3rd in individuals and Rachel Simpson for placing 4th!!! (even though she was almost sick on the mat!) but her actual routine was excellent!) And last but not least to Julie for stepping in at the last moment to group stunt! Well Done! An excellent job!

American Football Leeds University v Loughborough University
Final score:
Leeds 6
Loughborough 13
There was a great turn out to travel down to Loughborough on Sunday, to cheer for our American football team. Another early morning start (although not as bad as for cheer comps) and we set off in the coolest double decker coach you have ever seen. Sat on the bottom level we felt a bit like the players’ groupies! We arrived in Loughborough at around 12-ish. The game did not seem to last as long as usual although we could not stop shivering for the 3 hour duration! I am also pretty positive that at one point the rain turned into snow!! The Loughborough cheerleaders managed to stunt at half time, although it was extremely muddy, which impressed everyone. We performed our routine at full time, which went really well. I’d like to say a big congratulations and thank you to all who turned up. We were rewarded with chips and curry in Walkabout. The journey home was ‘interesting’ and I’ve heard that there were more fun and games when we arrived back in Leeds…

8th February 2006
Basketball Leeds University v Newcastle University
Final score:
Home 87
Away 73
This was definitely one of the most interesting games the team has played this season. They were so aggressive that one of Newcastle’s players looked as if he may have attained a serious ankle injury and the biggest Newcastle player was taken off court with a bleeding arm!! It was a great game to cheer at and, judging by the plentiful dirty looks that we received, I think that we succeeded in putting the Newcastle players off their game! I hope the Leeds players appreciated all the effort we put into our carefully timed chants! And a big congratulations to the Leeds University basketball team.

Celtic Calendar!!
We are about to launch our first ever Cheerleading Calendar, and i hope everyone involved is excited!
Through buying this calendar, your support and contribution will go towards sending our dance team to America to compete at the Cheerleaders of America (COA) Nationals, in April 2006.
We would also like send a big thank you to Mike Anderson and Alan Oliver who put in a lot of time and energy to make this project a success, and of course the members of the Leeds University Celtic Cheerleading Team who gave up their time, effort and clothing to support this calendar, it would not have been possible without you.
We hope you enjoy this calendar as much as we enjoyed making it, and we will try and get the pics uploaded as soon as possible!

Celtics
- “People are impressed when you say your are a Celtic as it reflects on you as an athlete. I believe that the Celtics lead the way for university cheerleading..”
- Poppy Brennan,
Celtic Athlete
- “Basically Celtics is pretty much my life blood; training is actually my favourite time of the week when I can spend time with some of the best team-mates and friends anyone could have. I look to the next session or competition with excitement and anticipation. The best thing I ever did at University was to join this squad!”
- Steph Lim,
Celtic Athlete
